Friends Provident
Friends' Provident owes its existence to two former pupils of Ackworth School, near Pontefract, West Yorkshire - Samuel Tuke and Joseph Rowntree. When a master at the school died in 1828, aged 30, having made no financial provision for his wife and family, the two men came up with the idea of forming a provident institution to provide life assurance for members of the Society of Friends (more commonly known as Quakers). Four years later, at the annual gathering of Friends at Ackworth School, their proposal to establish the Friends Provident Institution was approved. One member of staff was appointed - the Secretary - who worked in a one-room office over a confectioner's shop in Bradford, and on 21 November 1832, our first policies were issued.
From these humble beginnings, Friends Provident has developed into a leading financial services group.
