Scottish Widows Life Insurance

The original prospectus promoted a plan for establishing a general fund for the purpose of insuring capital sums on lives. Even the first statement of principles upon which Scottish Widows would be built, indicated that this would be an organisation with broader horizons than other, similar institutions of the time. It proposed ‘the formation of a General Society, with similar but enlarged views, the benefit of which may be extended to all parts of the United Kingdom.'

The Scottish Widows Fund and Equitable Assurance Society - Scotland's first mutual life office - opened for business in 1815.

Its sheer longevity means Scottish Widows has grown and developed through times of turmoil and upheaval, from the Industrial Revolution through two world wars and into the era of global mass communication. Throughout that time, our mission has always been to help people plan their long-term financial futures.

As the company progresses, now as part of Lloyds TSB Group, we will never lose sight of that basic purpose. We have gone from strength to strength over the last 190 years and with well-established multi-channel sales, Scottish Widows is able to deliver value for money for all its customers.

Products available from Scottish Widows:

  • Mortgage Protection
  • Life Insurance (also know as Life Assurance or Life Cover)
  • Critical Illness Insurance (also know as Critical Illness Cover
